During the British attempt to quarantine firearms and ammunition, violent skirmishes broke out between Massachusetts's militiamen and the British troops. In his hesitancy, many leaders escape the city, and General Gage sends a detachment of soldiers to seize a stockpile of weapons in Concord, about 18 miles from Boston, instead.
